Hardware costs cut 50% with virtualisation

−50%Hardware cost
−60%Licence cost

A'ayan Leasing and Investment Company is one of Kuwait's highest-profile investment businesses. Its data centre had grown too complex and costly for an eight-person team to maintain, so INC established a virtualised environment based on Hyper-V (part of Windows Server 2008 R2), migrating physical servers with System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008.

Objectives

  • Cut hardware costs and reduce application licence fees
  • Simplify server management and maintenance
  • Consolidate all applications to one central location

What we did

  • Virtualised environment on Hyper-V
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 under an Enterprise Agreement
  • System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 for migration

Results

  • Physical servers reduced from 20 to 8; hardware cost down 50%
  • Server configuration in 1 hour instead of 3; restore in 1 hour instead of 8
  • Application licence costs lowered by 60%; power & cooling 50% less

We found Hyper-V to be more flexible and cost-effective than other offerings on the market, including VMware. We've cut costs by more than 50 per cent.
